This fun-filled full day tour starts at the Maropeng Visitors Centre. Maropeng means “returning to the place of origin” in Setswana, the main indigenous language in this area of South Africa Read up on the facts about the evolution of the world and especially humankind, explained in an interactive way. See fossils, learn how humankind evolved, view stone tools up to 1-million years old, take a ride through the ‘ice age’ or buy a typical souvenir at one of the market stalls and the curio shop. From Maropeng we proceed to the Visitors Centre of the Sterkfontein Caves. Sterkfontein Caves is the richest site in the world for early hominids. You can descend deep into the complex set of limestone caves where, scientists have discovered many hominid and other animal fossils dating back more than 4-million years, to the birth of humanity. The most important and most famous of these fossils are “Mrs Ples”, a 2.6-million-year-old Australopithecus skull, and “Little Foot”, an almost complete Australopithecus skeleton that is more than 3-million years old.. A tour into the caves is included.
